About us

The Bamboo Society of Australia (BSA) is the nation's leading voice in bamboo innovation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development. Established in 1998 and incorporated in Queensland in 1999, BSA began as a grassroots appreciation society, and has since evolved into a national force for change.
“Bamboo is more than just a plant. It’s a regenerative, carbon-sequestering powerhouse. And we’re here to champion its potential, not only as an eco-friendly resource, but as a key player in solving Australia’s environmental, economic, and social challenges.”

Our Mission

To foster and accelerate the growth of Australia’s bamboo industry, from cultivation to innovation, while advocating for the adoption of bamboo-based solutions in construction, textiles, biofuels, and more.

We believe bamboo is not just a sustainable alternative - it’s a better one. And its benefits go far beyond the surface:

  • Environmental impact: Bamboo restores degraded land, sequesters carbon at remarkable rates, and helps stabilise ecosystems.

  • Economic value: It offers scalable opportunities for regional economies, sustainable agriculture, and green manufacturing.

  • Social benefits: Bamboo enables community-led projects, supports local jobs, and promotes circular economy models.

At the heart of the BSA is a diverse collective: growers, conservationists, designers and architects, scientists and everyday bamboo enthusiasts - all united by a shared commitment to building a greener, more resilient Australia.

Environmental Stewardship

Our commitment to environmental stewardship is the cornerstone of everything we do.

Bamboo isn’t just sustainable, it’s regenerative. It restores soils, filters water, mitigates erosion, and captures carbon more efficiently than most tree species. Our environmental work focuses on education, advocacy, and applied research to unlock bamboo’s full ecological potential.

We actively support research initiatives, field trials, and environmental impact studies - and work alongside universities, policymakers, and landowners to embed bamboo into climate mitigation strategies.

🌱 Visit our Environmental Stewardship page to find out more about Australia’s environmental challenges and how bamboo can provide significant benefits - from reducing embodied carbon in construction, carbon sequestration, supplementing timber supplies to meet housing requirements, phytoremediation and more.
